Muhu’s thatched roofs and granite stone buildings.
Muhu was well known for its travelling hand craftsmen and builders who found lucrative jobs on the mainland or even abroad. These people are very much responsible for Muhu’s unique architecture. One of the main attractions are very detailly done granite stone buildings with beautiful edge and corner finishings. These buildings look far from usual countryside architecture and are more similar to city architecture.
Reed has been one of the main roof materials in Western Estonia and on the islands for many centuries. The tradition is still very much alive and you can find a lot of thatched roofs on Muhu. Reed is a great isolation material and is easily available on the islands. It is beautiful and esthetically suits the countryside building very well. Our thatched roofs are built in a 45 degree angle to avoid the rain getting in. It is also a very green material to use, reed grows back very fast when collected.
Both of these things together with stone fences make Muhus villages beautifully unique.
