Empowering Young Activists: Insights from Our Recent Webinar

In our third Islanders project webinar, we explored the crucial role of community engagement and activism in fostering sustainability, particularly for young people living on islands. We were honored to host two inspiring speakers, Aran Cosentino and Riccardo Bruno, who shared their journeys and insights into making a meaningful impact in their communities.

Introducing Aran: A Young Climate Activist

We began the session with Aran, a 16-year-old climate activist from Italy, who has gained recognition for his commitment to environmental action. He shared his journey of switching from awareness to action, emphasizing the urgency of talking about climate change. Aran’s activism began at a young age when he realized the profound impact of climate issues on his community and the planet. His initiatives, including organizing local clean-ups and gathering petitions, demonstrate how youth can lead by example. Aran’s story is a reminder that age does not limit the ability to effect change, and young voices are crucial in the fight for a sustainable future.

Aran also mentioned the importance of community in activism. He noted that a unified group can amplify individual efforts, turning small actions into significant movements. The defense of local ecosystems, such as the Albarone River, showcases how dedicated groups can create impactful change. He reminded everyone that no one is too small to make a difference, highlighting that collective efforts lead to powerful outcomes.

Small Actions, Big Differences

Following Aaron, Riccardo Bruno took the stage, reinforcing the theme of individual contributions in the fight for sustainability. He opened his segment with a powerful reminder from the Dalai Lama: “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” This quote resonated throughout the discussion, encouraging participants to recognize that every contribution counts, no matter how small it may seem.

Riccardo shared his experiences living in a small community in Turin, Italy, where he witnessed firsthand the power of grassroots movements. He emphasized that activism thrives in community settings, where individuals come together to advocate for shared causes. The sense of unity and purpose not only strengthens individual efforts but also amplifies the collective voice calling for change.

Activism Meets Academia

Both speakers stressed the importance of being informed and educated about the issues at hand. Riccardo, now a researcher, emphasized that understanding the complexities of sustainability and climate change is vital for effective activism. By merging academic knowledge with grassroots initiatives, activists can provide evidence-based solutions to policymakers, advocating for sustainable practices that benefit both communities and the environment.

Lessons Learned for Young Activists

During the Q&A session, participants posed important questions about the challenges of staying informed in an age of information overload. Both speakers agreed that cross-checking facts and collaborating with others are essential steps in navigating the complex landscape of information. They reiterated that knowledge empowers action; an informed community is a powerful one.

Looking Ahead

As we concluded the webinar, we encouraged all participants to take the insights shared by Aran and Riccardo to heart. By fostering community engagement and advocating for sustainability, young people can become catalysts for change on their islands and beyond. Together, we can empower the next generation of activists to create a brighter and more sustainable future for our islands.
