Malta: Sharing our Stories

We can honestly say that working with young people is what keeps us going. This part of our job is not only the crucial one, due to the fact that we are an NGO from Malta, but it is also the most enjoyable one – as we get to see the results and get the feedback from the young people pretty much instantaneously. Being part of the project like “Islanders: Many Islands – One Community”, gave us the opportunity to organize in-person labs with a group of our young people, and to get the insights on their thoughts and opinions when it comes to Maltese culture and heritage.

By sharing their views with us, they became our inspiration, and by participating in the labs like this, we hope that they also got inspired to start making small changes within their community. This is why we devoted one of our sessions to Maltese cultural and historical landmarks, combining art with storytelling. During this particular session, our young people chose their favorite landmark, capturing its essence on a paper through art, and telling us story behind it.

Just by being together in a magical surroundings of Pieta’s nature park, surrounded by trees and joyful buzz of the insects around us, we managed to connect and to revive some of the Maltese oldest traditions and landmarks to this day. We chatted about Maltese knights, Maltese fisherman’s and their Luzzu boats – vivid in color and impressive in shape, and of course, we couldn’t speak about Malta, without mentioning some of her most known churches. We ended our session with some Kinnie and Ftira, Maltese traditional comfort food, and we went our homes filled with the sense of gratitude. After all, we got to live on this beautiful island!
