Project Result: Innovation pathways for the use of ecoculturalism and narrative in building sustainable communities and inclusive futures for small islands

Islanders is now drawing to a close after two years of working together with young people from island communities across Europe. It has been an enriching experience for all participants, as we brought together young people and youth workers from Estonia, Greece, Malta, Portugal, and Sweden to celebrate the unique cultural heritage of island communities and imagine sustainable futures. Through a blend of local labs, online events, and a transnational workshop in Brussels, the project explored connections between history, culture, and the environment.

“This project will leave a lasting impact on the young participants, inspiring them to become
more engaged citizens. Equipped with new knowledge and meaningful connections, they are
better prepared to navigate the complexities of the modern world. The bonds formed during
this project will hopefully continue to strengthen the shared identity of islanders across borders.”

We are delighted to announce the release of our final project result, ‘Innovation pathways for the use of ecoculturalism and narrative in building sustainable communities and inclusive futures for small islands’. The project’s results highlight the power of storytelling and intergenerational dialogue in preserving living heritage while promoting social, economic, and environmental inclusion. From creating AI art of historical landmarks in Estonia to sculpting the ‘Fat Lady of Malta’ and experimenting with traditional crafts like boat-building in Greece, young participants embraced their islands’ pasts while shaping bold visions for the future.

“Islanders: Many Islands – One Community was indeed a wonderful journey for getting more knowledge about the day-to-day realities of the people and young people living in different islands than ours.”

A key part of the project was the emphasis on hands-on activities, such as crafting, cooking with local ingredients, and reimagining historical narratives. Virtual campfires and webinars fostered transnational connections, sparking conversations about activism and sustainable development. These activities culminated in the Brussels workshop, where participants united to share ideas and engage with European institutions.

“Islanders: Many Islands – One Community” provided an exceptional experience for everyone involved, including both young people and youth leaders. This project was a journey of discovery and connection, offering invaluable insights into the lives of young people living on islands.

“Summarising the impact of this project, it is sure that young will remember the encounter with other islanders of their age, feeling their obligation towards Europe as active citizens and to their islands. They now possess a crucial part of the knowledge needed to react and take initiatives that will benefit their future.”
